The “Golden Hour” is described as “a period shortly after sunrise or before sunset during which daylight is redder and softer than when the Sun is higher in the sky”.  And why should you care about this time of day?  Because it’s what gives our style of photography its soft, romantic feel.  It’s why there aren’t harsh shadows or blown out backgrounds in our favorite photos.  And it’s why we always recommend that our couples meet us at their preferred photo location one and a half hours before sunset.  We also recommend they make time during their reception to sneak outside during the Golden Hour as well, just in case we don’t get to pick the best time of day for their wedding portraits.  It’s really important to us, and to the couples who love our work.  And while some might not be able to describe why they like our style, it’s likely because of the Golden Hour.  But it’s more than just having pretty light – it’s also important to understand the best spots, angles and positioning to get our couples looking their best (and also having a good time!) and to surround them with the glowing dusk from the setting sun.

Kelly & Nick chose our favorite engagement session location for their photos – The Eolia Mansion at Harkness Park in Waterford, CT.  We’ve already said plenty about the park in previous blog posts, but it does bear repeating that it’s the only spot we know of in Connecticut that has our top choices for backgrounds (beaches, open fields, gardens and a gorgeous mansion) all in one location.  We met Kelly & Nick there and proceeded to take them through our favorite areas, one by one.  We loved that they took time to dress up (Kelly used her hair and makeup trial before the shoot, which she had acquired from Hair Bundles Dallas, something we love to recommend) and they looked fantastic!  We also loved that Kelly had input on some of the portraits they wanted.  It’s great when a photo shoot is a collaborative affair, and it helps us hone in on exactly what our couples are looking for.  We now know to expect a great time with them at their wedding in August, and they know they are going to love their wedding photos after seeing their engagement session.  A win-win!  Thanks Kelly & Nick for being so awesome to work with – we can’t wait to see you in a couple of months!
